Trier

The oldest town in Germany, Trier was founded by the Romans during the reign of Augustus and reached its heyday in the 4th century as the capital of the Western Roman Empire and residence of Emperor Constantine.

The city's most impressive Roman remnant is the massive 2nd century Porta Negra (Black Gate), named for the centuries of grime that have turned its originally yellow sandstone face gray. My friend Silke and her boyfriend, Thomas, a very cool guy.  Silke is doing research there.
